NAIDOC Week

21/07/2017

NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life.

The 2017 National NAIDOC theme was Our Languages Matter. The theme aims to celebrate the essential role that Indigenous languages play in both cultural identity, linking people to their land and water, and in the transmission of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, spirituality and rites, through story and song.

We were very lucky to have Aunty Robyn, a local indigenous elder from the Yugambeh family visit our school assembly on Monday 10th July. Aunty Robyn spoke to the whole school about the significance of the indigenous culture and languages. She also spoke about the various ways that NAIDOC week is celebrated throughout the community.

Throughout the week each class participated in various NAIDOC week activities focusing on the Yugambeh language using the Yugambeh App. An example of the wonderful work of our students will be displayed in the iCentre for the entire school community to enjoy.
